Channeling My Inner Olivia Palermo
Now let the truth be known: I'm much more of a Farrah Fawcett meets Kate Moss kinda girl, but every once in awhile my inner Olivia Palermo comes calling. During Closet Purge 2011 (the saga continues) I came across these faux leather shorts. Remember when I got them last fall in Canada? Well every time I see these babies Olivia P comes to mind. In fact, for a good while there every purchase I made was met with 'Olivia Palermo made me do it' (seemed to make sense at the time?). After awhile that got old or I forgot about it or something. More than likely my inner hippie came calling and OP got shoved to the back of the closet.

And it has lived on my desktop ever since.
I got fixated on finding the same top. Oh who am I kidding? I also got fixated on achieving a version of those skinny legs, but a failed 30 turned 86 Day Shred and 3 plates of guacamole later the fixation died. Then as I was rooting around in le closet this weekend I came across a sleeveless black top with a slit in back versus the front and it was game over.
Moments later we snapped these pics while a beat-up VW bus pumping reggae beats drove round and round the block until I couldn't take it anymore, hopped back in the car and sped off. Awkward

Seconds later I'm wondering if the shorts are too short while the Chef busts up
laughing on the sidewalk. Where's the love?
Finally lap three of reggae madness sends me racing off down the street back
to the car hollering over my shoulder, "It's not a side show ya crazy birds!"
Oh yeah there's the back of the shirt. Everything happens for a reason?
As you can see summer has shown her beautiful face in Southern California and I couldn't be happier. There is nothing quite like waking up to the sound of boats in the harbor and kids laughing their heads off in the distance. Here's hoping for a week of minimal work and warm days in the sun!

Wishes Realized
Just before Christmas I did a mini Wish List/Gift Guide - it was nothing fancy, just some of my faves to give and receive. Thank goodness Santa (aka the Chef) was doing his blog reading due diligence. It was great fun to open a pair of those crazy Gypsyz and get to test them out in the Canadian snow. They are even better than I hoped for because they're cut to stay up rather than droop down in the leg. I would not, however, fave them for indoor wear - mostly due to the harder plastic type foot bed. Aside from that they're a total win and I plan to wear these babies into the spring with denim shorts and a t - sometimes scrunched down and sometimes over the knee. Call the Fashion Police on me all you want, I'm a fast runner and they'll never take me down!!

Make New Friends, But Keep The Old
Saturday afternoon found me in a hot mess of places I've temporarily sworn off of (think wallet restriction) - J.Crew, Free People, Zara, Barneys... Why do I do this to myself? Is it on purpose? Perhaps to test my volition? Quite honestly, I don't have a specific answer. All I know is I escaped with wallet intact and two pairs of tights in bag. (Okay and a jacket. But it was on steep sale so I get a pass). Whatever the case, something wonderful happened as we strolled about - I was stopped at least ten times by women and men asking where I got my boots. It's a wonderful feeling when you've leapt off your wallet for something you love only to find yourself twelve months later with strangers sharing your sentiments - especially when you're trying to save yourself from falling into boot cavern 2010.
Making new friends is a treasured experience (present company included of course!), but there is something delicious about having old ones who know your secrets. These are the relationships that don't require words, where trust has been built upon a firm foundation of shared good and bad times. And so it goes, at least for me anyway, with my closet. I love to go on the hunt for a new certain something - a dress, a unique ring or bangle for the jewelry collection, the perfect pair of jeans...or even better - the ultimate boot. The act of discovering that "thing" is oftentimes just as exciting as the thing itself - but the relationship is truly put to the test once I get it home. Is it as great as I thought it was? Does it work with as many things as I'd anticipated? Do I still want to wear it all the time after a couple of months? Only the test of time will tell. And so it has been with my military boots. They have proven to be a never fail - I jumped at the chance to wear them in the summer when it was cool. At first sight of fall I busted them out here in what turned out to be one of my favorite outfit posts yet. And on Saturday they helped me to remember (as did everyone who complimented them) that I don't neeeeeeeeeed a new pair of boots. Only a new pair of heels. I kid, I kid!!

My bad the bag has only been around for 3 or 4 months,
but with how often it's seen here you can probably tell it's a fave.
And it was one of those - see it, have to have it, step away from it Carrie,
can't get it out of my mind, gotta return and get it! items.
You know those, right? hehe
And while we're on the shopping topic, how is your fall wardrobe coming along? Have you been able to work in some of your old friends and keep the new ones to a minimum? Or do you find yourself in a whole new circle of friends? hehe Would love to hear what some of your faves currently are. And hopefully the weekend was kind to you as well. Oh Mondays - they sure to reappear quickly.
Leather and Leopard
There are many reasons I have long been referred to as a "free bird" by the people who know me best. In a nutshell I'm basically a non-conformist (aka all over the place) - especially in the apparel area. What's the term? Eclectic. Yes, that's it. One minute (or hour) I can be looking over a J.Crew catalogue sighing over everything I neeeeeeeed, then two minutes later you'll find me eyes glazed over contemplating the lack of boho chic in my life a la Free People (and don't even get me started on my evening "reading" of the Shopbop website. eyeglasses anyone?) . Olivia Palermo is one of my best girlfriends when it comes to style mentors - and Jackie O has been an icon of mine for as long as I can remember - but then I'll enter my closet and come out happy as a lark in a pair of harem pants tucked into knee high military boots with a beat-up chunky sweater coat thrown over circa my early 90's grunge phase. Are you like this, too? Do you stick to any one style or find yourself moving fluidly between several?
Yesterday's Tucker post made my heart sing because it was so unexpectedly, off-the-wall perfect. When I was in Canada I wore this and honestly cannot wait to wear it again. It is probably my favorite blog outfit post to date, however this one ranks right up there as well. And yet all 3 are distinctly different. I say all this to say...enter the opposite end of the spectrum. I'm going to throw myself out there and say there's little chance of us spotting Olivia Palermo in yesterday's outfit, but today's? Oh yes - it is Olivia P all the way.
With the exception of the shorts each of these items has lived in my closet for at least a year, and I'm really proud of that. One of my current goals is to work my closet as much as possible and enjoy what I already have. As for the shorts - one of my "must" stops when I go home is Aritzia. I have scored some major finds in their stores - they carry everything from top contemporary brands to their own private label items and I was determined to lay hands on a pair of their faux leather shorts for fall...of course I arrived in Canada to discover they were entirely sold out nationwide. The Manager of their downtown Calgary store was so kind and tracked down the last pair in the company (I was so excited and grateful!! and they said they should restock in October) in - wait for it - NEW JERSEY. I went all the way home to find my dream shorts on the other side of the country I just came from. Gotta love kismet!! Somethings are just meant to be. I'm sure Olivia would agree.

Convertibles
Have you heard the term convertible used to describe clothing or handbags? If not, it's basically when you can wear one piece multiple ways - hence, converting it into multiple looks - convertible! One of my favorite new items is a convertible by Brandy & Melville. I'm not sure they actually intended for it to be one - but it totally is and I love it. So here are the 3 separate pieces it represents:
The Dress
The Tunic
American Apparel has this super cute convertible dress that can be worn seven different ways, Free People has the awesome ruffle skirt that can also be worn as a dress, and check out the Bolu leather backpack that doubles as a messenger bag - it is beautiful! I'm all over anything that can be worn multiple ways because it makes it much easier on the pocketbook. And if I really like a particular piece I want to wear it a lot but not be redundant, so a variety of look options is very helpful in that sense too!
How about you - any convertible wearers or lovers out there? I'd love to get some more ideas!

The Dress
Cute or what? Check out the slouchy side - love it! First I put on the standard cami, then a ribbed tank dress to make sure there was no see-through action, and finally threw the slouchy dress (convertible) over top. Entirely simple outfit that you could easily wear with flip flops for an afternoon beachy vibe or a bit more sassed with a bootie or heel (as seen here) for an early dinner. It was completely freezing this day, but someday it will warm up and this item will be worn as a dress.
The Tunic
I think this one's my fave look. No check that. It is my fave look. I love tunics. They're great with jeans, leggings, shorts or skirts. They're fun and flexible. Yes. this one is it.
Check it up close. You can pull it up just a little at the bottom so it loses the dress feel, but still covers the butt so it's great with leggings. I don't know about you, but I'm not a fan of the uncovered legging'd butt if there aren't any pockets on the leggings. I just feel uncomfortable, but that might just be my preference.
And, this particular look is excellent with the military boots. If fall-like weather is going to persist, I have no choice, but to haul out the fall attire. At least the fall foot attire. Hopefully summer will reappear soon :)
The Top
Okay. Examine it. First, I must say a wicked breeze had picked up and was blowing straight into me. All I was thinking was 'get to car and turn on heat stat!'. Otherwise the top version is far more blousy in front and not so, shall we say, sucked into the body.
Much more like this, if you can get a better view from the side.
Or maybe this? For the win! Whatever the case, I really do enjoy wearing this as a top as well. It's great with skinny denim and a heel.
In this instance all I had to do was throw a little jacket on and we were off to dinner!
