This or That: Fisherman Knits

I'm in the market to update my closet with a couple of sweaters for winter, and have
always been a fan of this style.  Isabel Marant's version is a real beauty, but at a whopping
(at least for my budget) $775 there's basically no chance of that mother landing in my
closet anytime soon.  The other day I was out shopping when Alexa Chung's version caught my eye.
It looks pretty close, is cut to hit just at the hip and has a bit of a shrunken fit like so many of
the cable knits that are out now.  I do believe that was a rhyme.  I scooped up Alexa's version and think
it'll be cute with shorts and tights or denim and boots.

What do you think?  Go big or go home?

If you've fallen ill in summer then I don't have to tell you how uncomfortable it is.  The sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the ice cream truck is singing its tune in the wind...and you're laid out flat in bed.  Possibly whimpering. Yesterday I woke up feeling super dizzy and just plain under the weather.  Instead of listening to my body I thought I'd give vacuuming a try--not the best idea when you can't stand up straight. Moments later I was back in bed moderately worse for the wear.

Here's the thing about being sick:  there's still technology.  It whispers to you from every corner:  turn on the tv, you want a smoothie (blender in the kitchen), maybe someone sent you a text message, and the worst:  hey why don't you just shop online for, oh, 3 hours.  As a result of doing just that I have found myself in a bit of a pinch--how to make room and have the budget for all of the following?

And yes, I realize I have been bit by the cheetah/leopard bug.  I think it's what landed me in the horizontal in the first place.  Conspiracy theory!

Welcome Home Isabel

I know you're all probably thinking I scored the Red Poppy Pumps from last week's post.  Alas they still evade me, but I am tracking down a couple leads.  They don't call me Inspector Shoeseau for nothing (remember that one?).  In the meantime, however, I must reveal how it is that I reapproached the search with new vigor.  About a month ago, after once again professing my undying love for Isabel Marant's designs, I received an invite to a private sale where none other than some of you know what was being featured.

Confession:  I almost declined.  What if I got there and even the sale price was just too far out of reach causing me to spiral out of control into a mad depression?  I mean a girl's gotta weigh the odds.

Thankfully common sense took hold and I threw caution to the wind tossing my disheveled mop into a ponytail, donning my favorite fishnet sweater (seen here), a simple tank, some leggings and a pair of military boots to brave the unknown.  Hot damn I was on my way!  However by the time I arrived there was barely anyone left.  My heart sank.  Thoughts raced through my head:  "Why hadn't I come earlier?  There are things I recognize from the runway!  *cue whimpering* Why did I drag my feet?  Thank God I'm wearing a bunch of my faves or I'd really feel like hell. Why did I initially give into fear?  Oh look at that leather vest.  Too bad it's probably too big.  Oh that dress is cute.  Crap there aren't any of the red shoes.  Or the sequin pants.  What is wrong with me?  Wait a hot minute that vest's my size."

Pause.  Retrace steps.

Wait a hot minute.  That vest is my size.

I look to my left and then right.  There's got to be something wrong with it.  It's the best thing in this room and none of these crazy women are even looking at it.  Before someone can shank me and run off with my treasure I gently remove it from the rack, saunter over to the mirror barely breathing with hope and sheer giddiness over holding a piece from a designer that is a dream of mine, slip the vest on and immediately tear up.  I'm not lying.  I could feel the waterworks coming.  You don't understand - or maybe you do - I just love her clothing and it was a moment I really didn't know would ever happen.  But it did.  And they told me a bunch of people had wanted the vest, but NO ONE could fit in it.  Hollar!! Some things are meant to be.

There it is.  Sometimes I just open the closet to look at it.  Yep it's still there.  Close.
Look at it up close.  Okay go lie down now.  Okay look again.  Rinse and repeat.
Look at her (she's a girl) shoulder pads.
No seriously.  LOOK!  okay sorry I'm still a little worked up...
But can you blame me?  Please say no.  This is the look of elation.
Dreams really do come true!
I almost had to send the Chef to get depends - for the car ride home.

Transition Inspiration: Isabel Marant RTW Fall 2010

For the past 5 days in Southern California Mother Nature has graciously paid us back in full (and in record time) for the summer we were robbed of.  Two of my best friends were visiting and we had a great time taking in the warmth, but when they left this afternoon I have to say I kind of wished the hot weather would have departed as well.  Don't get me wrong - it's been great to wear summer clothes in appropriate temperatures, but now it's time to cut to present.  How can I possibly get excited to even talk about fall fashion much less take an outfit picture in July-like weather?  It doesn't feel like fall at all...I mean I've eaten ice cream for breakfast 3 days in a row!

The truth is we usually get a zap of heat in September/October that causes us to pause on the fall wardrobe.  It made me wonder today - what have I done in the past? So tonight I spent some time rooting around in the closets before turning to Isabel Marant's Ready-To-Wear Fall Line for inspiration.  Without fail, I fall in love with every piece of her collection season after season.  Her clothing speaks to my heart in all the right ways and knows just what I want before I can articulate it, her Fall 2010 collection being no exception.  It is absolutely perfect warm weather transition wear and I felt renewed vigor staring at the looks over and over again.  It's like Grease meets Parisian-chic...

See what I mean?  The rolled denim is perfect and the sparkly bomber adds
just the right unexpected touch.
Can someone please tell me where I can get red, cropped skinny denim?
And don't even get me started on the amazing jacket.
Never before have I so longed for electric blue sequined denim.
This is one I could replicate so quickly if I just had the pants!!
I won't even comment.  The outfit speaks volumes all on its own.

The most important thing I took away from watching this show (on repeat for an hour, I might add) is that even though I may not be able to afford all these separates - I can look in my closet and find similar shapes and silhouettes to create really great warm weather fall transition outfits.  Isabel Marant continues to be a designer I look to for inspiration because she doesn't follow rules - she follows what she likes.

Quit Playing Games With My Heart

I spent a good portion of a few conference calls perusing the Anthropologie website in every effort to cheer myself up over yesterday's sobering post that was deepened by a big ol' dose o' Monday.  Blech.

Now that I have Anthro's 15% off coupon burning a hole in my mind and on my desk I've allowed myself to be temporarily swept away to fall days where I skip through colored leaves in the most fantastically supple leather boots you ever did see, eventually collapsing in a crunchy pile - of leaves not boots, while warm apple turnovers bake away in my gourmet kitchen and chic grey cashmere pillows miraculously appear on my white couch just in time for cozy movie marathons and yet another episode of Felicity where she appears fresher than ever back for another year at UNY (and it is UNY in Felicityland so get there and get the dvd's if you haven't already - they'll change your life).

The reality is I probably won't see a colored leaf that isn't burnt and brown here in SoCal, and I'm not falling into a pile of anything that could potentially cause a broken hip - deal with it - but Felicity, apple turnovers, grey cashmere and cozy days are imminent (sans the gourmet kitchen - damn you money fairies).  And what better way to conjure up the images than dressed in some wonderful Anthro finds that just so happened to be purchased for 15% off?  See?  I'm getting there...:)

Imagine it...
How about the Bianka Blouse with a pair of JBrand Love Story Bell Bottoms?
Can you hear the leaves crunching beneath your knee high Miu Miu's
while your wavy tresses blow ever so slightly in the still-warm fall breezes?

Maybe you're out for a lunch with the girls on a semi-crisp day.
It's not cool enough for a jacket, but you still need
a little something to keep warm.
I'm imagining it over a fab fitted James Perse Scoop Neck Tee
and my most fave J.Crew Ankle Stretch Toothpick Denim
(because those fit past the ankle on me)
Chances are I'll be in these sleek knee high Loub's
or maybe a knee-high military?
I prefer a little height on the heel with this long sweater, personally.

Just because it's fall don't say good-bye to the dress!
...or at least not the Paseo Ruffled Skirt (yes that IS leather!)
There are so many ways you could wear this!!
How about with this sheer fabulosity Padded Shoulder Blouse (tucked in) from Vince?
And this Rag & Bone Military Jacket over top?
A knee high sleek boot might also be in order with this one...I'll let you choose.

And before I run off...let me just say I almost forgot my name
on one of the calls today
because I could not stop staring at/dreaming about the Loose Reign Boots!
Can you imagine???  Because I know I sure can!
Bring on the leggings/jeggings/skinnys, one of Isabel Marant's thermals -
yes I have seen, touched, tried on and damn near died -
and a fitted blazer or military jacket,
and you just might hear the following headline:
Southern California Woman Spontaneously Combusts Over New Fall Wardrobe.

Don't test me Anthropologie!!

Update:  Everyone - I will not be commenting today.  I don't know if you read Bumpkin on a Swing's blog, but I learned this morning that she passed away and she is someone I considered a friend.  Just going to take a moment and reflect on a woman who had a highly infectious personality
and a real zest for life.  You should check out her blog.
