Let it Hang

Saturday afternoon, while everyone in the east was experiencing a snowstorm, here in Southern California we got 80 degrees.  Is it so wrong to want to dress seasonally appropriate?  Apparently so.

After tossing clothes all around my room in a frenzy (think tornado) of 'wanna wear a sweater, too hot, how about jeans, tired of jeans, do we need to turn on the a/c?, where's that blazer, can't find my shorts, rinse and repeat' I emerged rather frazzled in something completely man repeller-ish.  Readying myself for the inevitable wind tunnel of guffaws, I threw on my never fail orange sunglasses (best $5 I've ever spent thanks H&M) and strolled down the hallway trying to be all casual aka hiding behind the shades.  You know that maneuver.

"Okay I'm ready," she says. *Grabs handbag and makes a point of not making eye contact*
"We're getting a picture of that, right?" he says looking up.
"Funny funny ha ha let's get outta here," she responds with an eye roll.
"No for real you have to get this one.  They're gonna love it.  It's all in the crotch," he says chuckling.

Waiting for the other shoe to drop I roll down to the car waiting for some comment about Depends Undergarments, but nary a one was uttered.  I do believe this blog has worn off on the Chef.  He's come to accept me wearing crotch droopers in public.  What is going on in the land?

Go big or go home:  fearlessly stand where cars can drive by and mock your pants.
No fear.
Close-up.
It's October.  I wore open-toe sandals. Whatever with it already.
This one's for the Repeller.
Somewhere out there she's bent into some pose wearing a sh*tload of clothes I can't afford.
At least not all in one swoop.  Carry on Repeller, carry on.

I would just like the record to show I perfected this look in the 8th grade.  Yes friends, you read that right.  On the first day of 8th grade I wore a pair of black what we referred to as 'parachute pants', a cream colored tencel military vest with a heather grey t-shirt beneath, and a pair of leather lace-up oxfords. Not much has changed in *cough* 20 years.  Does someone have pills?  I'm feeling lightheaded thinking about my age.

As an aside I spent Saturday afternoon wedding attire shopping for a friend.  During this time I was stopped at least 5x by random strangers who profusely complimented this outfit.  One particularly stylish lad actually said to me, 'You are so Alexander Wang right now it is killing me.'

Who knew a tornado could produce such results? Perhaps I need to throw things around more often.

Pennywise? Is That You in the Drain?

Today started out with mad buckets of rain before the sun was even up.  De-lish!  I love a good rain storm and immediately rolled over and went back to sleep to wait for the 8:15 alarm.  Cue thunder and lightning - so instead I just laid there in my cozy bed, covers pulled up around my ears, listening to a storm we aren't usually so lucky to get here in Southern California.  By noon it still hadn't let up, so I walked out of my office, opened the front door and stood there a moment before grabbing the camera as the rain poured down.

Crazy, huh?  You can totally see the flooding along the sidewalk.

By late afternoon I was in a full-on mood for comfort food so before the Yankees game could start (heeelp me)  we ran out to grab some essential ingredients in the midst of a torrential downpour.

Have you ever read Stephen King's "It"?  I gotta say - that book had me looking under the bed, down the sink, in the pipes, and over my shoulder for months.  I could barely glance at an old newspaper or yearbook for years without thinking an image was going to speak to me.  And storm drains?  Oh hell no.  I would cross to the other side of the street.  Yet I have to admit - even as I was crossing I would be looking back over my shoulder to see if Pennywise the Dancing Clown was staring back at me from the drain, holding out a balloon to entice me, just waiting to rip my freaking arm out of the socket!!

What was that Pennywise?  You want me to hand you the lid
to your soda?  Nice try bitch - I don't think so.

You in there? I hear the circus music...

NOT FUNNY CHEF!! (my bf for those who just started following)

Okay funny haha you got me.  Just don't do it again.
Especially not while the neighbor's watching me from his front porch
as I stare into the drain hollering for Pennywise.  Good grief.

I see you trying to pass me the fake shoe that'll
turn into a big moth and chew my face off, Pennywise!
(He knew your greatest fears and used them to terrorize you to death!!)

The funny thing is though, Pennywise could morph into all kinds of different
things - whatever IT needed in order to get rid of you.
One minute I'm standing on the sidewalk.
The next a truck comes zooming up out of nowhere and,
despite ample room to park all over the street,
it veers up onto the sidewalk directly behind me!!
Coincidence?  I think not...IT!

One of my favorite things about the story is how it brings a group of misfit kids together and paints a picture of the bonds of unbreakable friendship (amidst ultimate childhood nightmares come true - thanks Stephen King).  Along the way the group learns that it is what they believe will work that ultimately succeeds when they come up against the thing itself...which means I'm going to make like Eddie and sleep with an asthma inhaler under my pillow from now until the trauma of 'It' memories subside.  If I think of it as bleach in the eyes - then it can be.

She Wore Lemlem(on)

Have you heard of Lemlem?  How about Liya Kebede?

Lemlem is a wonderful line of gauzy, easy-breezy clothing and accessories, and it is the brain child of supermodel-turned actress-turned designer (and also Goodwill Ambassador for the World Health Organization), Liya Kebede.  She founded the line in 2007 as a way to provide traditional weavers in her native country of Ethiopia with a means to escape poverty.

I have to say I'm usually highly suspect of models-turned actresses-turned designers-turned home interior decorators-turned whatevers - and not without good reason.  A lot of of the time these people are selling their name as an alternate way to make more money (and there's nothing wrong with that in and of itself), but many have very little to do with the actual product that is turned out - or the process it undergoes to get to the consumer.  However this is not the case with Lemlem or Liya at all - and who doesn't want to get behind a woman who is trying to make a difference in the world?  The word Lemlem means "to bloom or flourish":

And I suspect that this is exactly what is occurring for weavers in Ethiopia who are partaking in the construction of these delightful items.

Just prior to Memorial Day I did a post on beach cover-ups.  Prior to doing the post I had been eyeballing a particular Lemlem tunic for weeks in a favorite haunt of mine, so decided to include an alternate dress style in the post.  At the time I was unaware of the history behind the line and more concerned about the price tag on the garment because it was by no means inexpensive.  But after learning a little more about the people my purchase would go to support I jumped off my wallet and got the Tiru Open Weave Tunic and honeys I have not regretted it once.

Examine it.  The one at J.Crew is identical to the one I bought except mine's not on backorder until August 24th - instead it's resting comfortably in my closet.  In the past couple weeks it has gotten a lot of good use and I'm very happy with it because it can be worn for much more than just beach attire.

Think: lounging around your house on a Saturday afternoon wearing denim shorts and a tank.  It's a little breezy, but you'd like to sit outside and read a magazine.  What's a girl to do?  Throw on the Tiru Tunic and relax away.

Maybe it's a super gusty day at the beach. The sun's shining brightly, but you fear a sandstorm might come up and catch you off guard.  No problem.  Tiru's got it covered.

Seriously.  We damn near blew away this day, but it was still rad.

Perhaps you've endured a rather balmy yet somewhat muggy afternoon.  You're going to meet your girlfriends for a cocktail, but don't feel like wearing a dress (sticky legs = no can do) and jeans will be too warm.  Why not try the Tiru over a light cami and a pair of cropped leggings completing your look with a cute heel?

(Yes the Swedish Hasbeens are on maximum overdrive over here.  If you own a pair you know why.)

Worked charmingly for me.  And this is only one of several options that Lemlem has to offer for Spring and Summer.  You can check them out here, here and here for lots of different styles - there are also plenty of adorable pieces for children.  But if you are interested I would recommend acting fast - these pieces are handcrafted and appear to be selling out quickly.

Channeling the 80's

Last summer when it became apparent that 80's fashion was definitely going to make a full comeback I started to consider how I could incorporate a potentially scary fashion time period (death to the half shirt and all the neon atrocities) back into my wardrobe.  Naturally it caused me to skip down memory lane to what my favorites had been then.

Channeling the 80's
Clockwise from upper left:  Shopbop - Victorialand Safari Vest, Gap - Denim Biker Jacket, Net-a-Porter - Splendid Jersey Harem Pant, Shopbop - Juicy Couture Camo Slim Cargo Pants

-I remembered the harem pants, t-shirt and safari vest I wore on the first day of 8th grade - and how my dad asked me if I was really going to leave the house looking like that.  Har!  Thanks Dad!

- Then I suddenly recalled my favorite camouflage cargo pants found at the dreaded Army & Navy store (Canada) my mom insisted we go to "just to take a look".  Mom knows best because I remember leaving there with not only the pants, but also a very cool pair of oxfords that got more than their fair share of love that Fall.  Those pants were a mad hit and my little brother was mortified to be related to me. :)

-I also remembered the Michael Jackson craze we were in then.  How he took biker and military jackets to a whole new level - and how I wore my grey leather biker jacket until it was worn thin.

Ahhhhh - the good old days; funny how they can come back around.  When I looked in my closet today I realized that each of those pieces is there once again in varying forms, and can honestly say I love wearing them just as much now as I did then.  Only with a much higher and more expensive heel.

What are your former favorites?  Are you finding ways to incorporate them into your wardrobe...or have you left them all in the past?
